A joint without welding
Both the press joint and the grooved joint are made cold — with no welding and no naked flame. In a historic building, that counts twice over.
Národ sobě — The Nation to Itself
A building the nation built for itself
The National Theatre is more than a theatre. It was built from a public collection to which people from every walk of life contributed, and to this day it is a symbol of Czech culture and of belonging together. The inscription above the stage, "Národ sobě" ("The Nation to Itself"), says exactly that.
16 May 1868
The foundation stone, taken from Říp Hill, is laid. It is joined by stones from other places bound up with Czech history.
11 June 1881
The theatre, designed by the architect Josef Zítek, opens for the first time — with Smetana's opera Libuše.
12 August 1881
A fire destroys the dome, the auditorium and the stage. A new collection raises one million guilders in just 47 days.
18 November 1883
The restored theatre, rebuilt under the architect Josef Schulz, reopens — once again with Libuše.
1977–1983
A complete reconstruction of the building and the construction of the New Stage, completed for the hundredth anniversary of the reopening.
A whole "National Theatre generation" of artists took part in its decoration — Mikoláš Aleš, František Ženíšek, Vojtěch Hynais, Josef Václav Myslbek and others. The building is a national cultural monument.
