Why stainless steel for fire protection pipework

Fire protection piping spends most of its lifetime idle. Stagnant water causes pitting corrosion in carbon steel.

No corrosion in stagnant water

Sprinkler and hydrant systems are filled with water that does not flow. Unlike carbon steel, stainless steel does not undergo pitting corrosion under these conditions.

Stable flow rate

No corrosion products, no deposits. Flow on system activation matches the design results even after decades of operation.

Does not block sprinkler heads

Corrosion particles from carbon steel are a known cause of sprinkler failure. Stainless steel does not produce corrosion particles.

Resistance to cyclic loading

Pressure tests, filling and draining, temperature changes. Stainless steel handles these cycles without issues.

Suitable for wet and dry systems

In wet systems it resists stagnant water; in dry systems it resists condensate that naturally forms in the pipework.

Long service life

Eliminates the need for a full replacement of fire protection pipework after 25–30 years, which is standard practice with carbon steel.

TAVINOX PRESS Technical Manual

includes sections such as:

  • Certifikace PAVUS a VdS CEA 4001
  • Mokrý a suchý sprinklerový systém
  • Dimenzování dle ČSN EN 12845
  • Pokyny pro instalaci a revize
  • Tlakové třídy LH, OH1–OH4

Fire protection pipework must work after decades of inactivity. Corrosion from carbon steel is the leading cause of sprinkler failure.

TAVINOX PRESS with PAVUS certification meets the requirements of VdS CEA 4001 and is ready for the moment when reliability is a matter of safety.

Frequently asked questions about fire protection distribution systems

Why is stainless steel piping better for sprinkler systems than black steel?
Sprinkler systems contain stagnant water, which causes corrosion in carbon steel, reduces the internal cross-section and clogs sprinkler heads. Stainless steel 316L does not corrode under these conditions.
Is TAVINOX PRESS stainless steel piping certified for sprinkler systems?
Yes. PAVUS certification in accordance with VdS CEA 4001. Certified applications: sprinklers (wet and dry), hydrants, water mist, foam and spray systems. Sizes Ø22–108 mm.
Which fire hazard classes are covered by the TAVINOX PRESS system?
LH, OH1, OH2, OH3 and OH4. Class OH4 is certified only for cinemas, exhibition spaces, theatres and concert halls.
What is the maximum certified pressure for DN100 fire protection piping?
For Ø108 mm (DN100): PN12.5 (12.5 bar). For Ø22–88.9 mm: PN16 (16 bar). Applies to both wet and dry systems.
Can the TAVINOX PRESS press system be connected to grooved piping?
Yes. PRESS-GROOVE fittings PR14GRF (transition) and PR14GRFGR (tee) allow connection of the press system Ø76.1–108 mm to grooved systems DN125–DN300.
How do I identify an unpressed joint on TAVINOX PRESS fittings?
The fittings are equipped with a dual unpressed joint detection system: (1) Leak Detect — EPDM O-ring with four water channels allows medium through from 0.1 bar, (2) a blue plastic pressing indicator that automatically falls off after correct pressing.
Does TAVINOX PRESS fire protection piping need to be colour marked?
Yes. Fire extinguishing system piping must be marked according to ČSN 13 0072 – the basic identification colour is red (RAL 3001), with white as the contrasting colour. Marking is done using stripes, coating or adhesive tapes with a maximum spacing of 10 m.
What pressing tool is required for larger-diameter fire protection piping?
For Ø76.1–108 mm, double pressing is required using a machine with a pressing force of at least 65 kN (Zupper ED-60100) with special TAVINOX jaws.
