Why stainless steel for heat pumps and solar systems

Solar systems and heat pumps operate in different regimes from conventional heat sources. Stainless steel makes sense in these applications.

Wide temperature range

Stainless steel handles reliably from –35 °C in winter operation to high operating temperatures. No material fatigue and no degradation.

Inert to glycol mixtures

Primary circuits of solar systems work with antifreeze mixtures. Stainless steel does not react even upon their degradation.

One material for both heat pump modes

Reversible heat pumps switch between heating and cooling. Stainless steel handles both modes without any change in properties.

Resistance to cyclic loading

Solar systems go through thermal cycles daily. Suitable for systems with repeated heating and cooling.

Service life matching the source

Solar collectors and heat pumps are designed for 20 or more years, a lifespan that stainless steel piping reliably meets.

TAVINOX PRESS Technical Manual

includes sections such as:

  • EN 12975 — solární systémy
  • Primární a sekundární okruhy TČ
  • Nemrznoucí směsi — kompatibilita
  • Dilatace při teplotních špičkách
  • Montáž a tlakové zkoušky

Solar systems operate with temperatures that conventional plastic piping cannot handle. Stainless steel handles it without compromise.

One material covers the entire range from –35 °C in winter to stagnation temperatures of solar collectors.

Frequently asked questions about heat pumps and solar systems

Is stainless steel piping suitable for air-to-water and ground-source heat pumps?
Yes. TAVINOX PRESS is suitable for secondary circuits of both air-to-water and ground-source heat pumps. The system covers operating temperatures from –35 °C (geothermal circuits in winter) up to +110 °C (condenser outlet). Stainless steel AISI 316L is compatible with water/glycol mixtures up to a 50/50 ratio used as antifreeze medium in primary ground circuits. Reversible heat pumps switching between heating and cooling do not require any change of material or fittings.
What stainless steel piping is suitable for solar thermal systems?
For solar thermal systems, TAVINOX PRESS stainless steel press piping certified according to EN 12975 and EN 12976 is suitable. The system is designed for continuous operating temperatures from –35 to +110 °C and short-term stagnation temperatures up to 200 °C (max. 10 h/year). For applications with continuous operating temperatures above 100 °C, only AISI 316L is recommended. Standard EPDM sealing is sufficient for most installations; in case of collector stagnation above 120 °C, FKM sealing with continuous resistance up to 160 °C is required.
How should stainless steel piping be connected to copper piping in a solar system?
Connection of TAVINOX PRESS stainless steel piping to copper piping is unrestricted – stainless steel and copper do not form problematic galvanic pairs under solar circuit conditions. Combination with carbon steel requires a brass dielectric fitting of at least 50 mm, with flow direction from carbon steel to stainless steel. In solar systems with glycol fillings, it is always recommended to verify the chemical compatibility of the corrosion inhibitor used with the materials in the circuit – stainless steel, copper and seals.
Which sealing material should be used in a solar system with collector stagnation?
For solar systems with collector stagnation, two sealing options are available. Standard EPDM sealing (–55 to +120 °C) is suitable for most installations with active circulation. For systems where stagnation and temperatures above 120 °C may occur, FKM sealing must be used (–20 to +160 °C continuously, up to 200 °C for 5 minutes intermittently).
Can stainless steel press piping withstand stagnation temperatures of solar collectors?
Yes. The system is certified according to EN 12975/12976 for continuous operation from –35 to +110 °C. Short-term stagnation temperatures are covered up to 180 °C (max. 30 h/year) and 200 °C (max. 10 h/year). The condition for these peak temperatures is the use of FKM sealing instead of standard EPDM and AISI 316L material for operation above 100 °C. Stainless steel itself handles stagnation temperatures without issue – the critical component is the sealing.
Can AISI 304L pipes be used for solar systems and heat pumps?
For solar systems, AISI 304L is suitable for operating temperatures up to 100 °C. In applications with continuous temperatures above 100 °C – typically primary solar collector circuits in summer or industrial solar systems – AISI 316L is required. In case of collector stagnation (above 150 °C), only 316L should be used. Heat pumps usually operate up to 65 °C at the outlet, where 304L is fully sufficient – however, we recommend 316L as the standard choice for all solar applications.
What is the thermal expansion of stainless steel piping and how should it be compensated?
The thermal expansion of TAVINOX PRESS stainless steel piping is α = 0.0165 mm/m·K. In solar systems with large temperature fluctuations (difference up to 135 °C between winter and summer operation), expansion compensation is especially critical. The TAVINOX PRESS technical manual contains calculation tables for Z-, T- and U-shaped expansion loops including minimum arm lengths.
